A British Invasion

18 Feb

Just of the in-laws, though.

While they were here, we got to do a lot of sightseeing. One of the nice things about living in San Diego is that when people come to visit, you feel like you’re on vacation too.

We took a walk down the pier in O.B. I couldn’t remember ever having been down it, but then I remembered when I was 16 I threw a burning shoebox full of my ex-boyfriend’s love letters off it. He was a really good artist, and all of the pretty things he made me just went into the sea. 😦 At least it was cathartic, at the time.

We saw some pelicans:

Very colorful:

And also very greedy!

That one just sat around waiting for a handout.

After O.B., we drove up to La Jolla. Just a typical San Diego day:

The ocean was the most amazing blue-green and crystal clear.

We wanted to have a look at the seals. This pitstop seems to be mandatory for any visitor; the seals are always there and you can usually see their pups playing too.

As San Diegans know, these seals are at the center of controversy. Their resting and birthing spot is in what is known as “The Children’s Pool”, which was created in the 1920’s. For a time the seals and humans shared the area, but for a few years in the 90’s it was declared a reserve and the seals took over. Apparently this is the only spot they have to give birth to their young. But they “pollute” the water, and now there are no human children allowed at The Children’s Pool.

They are quite entertaining to watch. You can walk down along the top of the breakwater to have a closer look. But this is where a (small) tragedy occurred:

My camera case fell down onto the rocks. My father-in-law asked the vegan guardian of the seals if he could go retrieve it, but of course he said “No.”

I was so proud of that little camera case. It was one of the first things I sewed by myself and it fit my camera perfectly (I’m still not sure how I managed that!) So, to honor its memory and to say goodbye, I wanted to share these pictures with you, when it was still in its prime:

Cute isn’t wasn’t it?

So where do I go from here, you ask? I guess I’ll have to make another one. I just hope I can get it to fit. Don’t worry, I’ll keep you posted!
